Tour 1 – Gjirokaster & Lekuresi Castle

The journey from Saranda to Gjirokaster takes about an hour and is quite scenic. Known as one of Albania’s two “museum towns” (the other being Berat), it is also a UNESCO World Heritage site. Its inclusion in the list is due to the abundance of well-preserved Ottoman buildings, which you’ll promptly notice upon arrival. Additionally, the town is also famous as the birthplace of Enver Hoxha, the leader of the People’s Socialist Republic of Albania, and Ismail Kadare, the most popular Albanian writer.

Gjirokaster is the “city of a thousand staircases”, which includes hundreds of houses – Ottoman-type towers with stone roofs, wooden balconies and stone walls. Surely part of our Albania Yachting to do list

Gjirokastra’s castle – is one of the biggest in the Balkans. Situated on the hilltop overlooking the city, is a witness of the history of the whole region across the centuries. The date for building this fortification is still unclear. According to archaeologists, the place had been inhabited since IV-V century. The Armaments Museum of the castle contains a collection of mostly post-War era weapons, photographs and artwork: the main gallery, with its eerily lit corridor, contains two columns of large German and Italian field guns, remnants of WWII.

Lekursi Castle (Kajala e Lëkurësit) is a castle on Lekursi Hill, just behind Saranda with an amazing view over the town and bay, making this the most popular and iconic viewpoint of Saranda.Inside the walls of Lekursi castle is a restaurant (Restorant Kalaja e Lekuresit) with an enormous outdoor terrace. Although it can be busy in summer, it is definitely a great spot for dinner or drinks, especially around sunset. Sometimes there is also traditional folk music and dance for a truly Albanian experience.

Tour 2 – Butrint & Blue Eye

Butrint – located approximately 20km from the modern city of Saranda, has a special atmosphere created by a combination of archaeology, monuments and nature in the Mediterranean. With its hinterland it constitutes an exceptional cultural landscape, which has developed organically over many centuries. Walking through this UNESCO-protected national park, you can see traces left by the Greeks, Romans, Byzantines, and Venetians.

In the afternoon, head inland to Syri I Kalter, which means ‘Blue Eye’. This natural wonder is a breathtaking freshwater spring surrounded by beautiful greenery. The outer part, the iris, is a stunning bright blue, and the inner dot , the pupil, is a dark cave spanning far down under the water. From above, the water looks just like a bright blue eye, hence the name.
